Our Fight

Three Pillars of Justice

We're fighting on three fronts to ensure dignity, access, and protection for Hart Island and the families who deserve to remember their loved ones.

Landmark Status

Legal protection to prevent destruction and ensure historic preservation.

  • Permanent safeguard against development
  • Recognition of cultural significance
  • Protection for future generations
  • Honoring 150 years of history

Family Access

Expanded visitation rights and dignified conditions for those honoring loved ones.

  • Increased visitation opportunities
  • Respectful memorial spaces
  • Family representation in decisions
  • Transparent communication

Oversight

Accountable management with family voices at the table.

  • Independent oversight committee
  • No grave disturbance or recycling
  • Public access to management plans
  • Community-centered decision making

Who's Buried on Hart Island

For over 150 years, Hart Island has been the final resting place for New York City's most vulnerable:

  • Infants and children who died without family to claim them
  • Immigrants who arrived seeking a better life but faced poverty and disease
  • AIDS victims during the epidemic, many abandoned by society
  • The poor and homeless whose lives mattered despite their circumstances
  • Unknown individuals whose identities were lost but humanity remains

Each burial tells a story of New York's struggles, resilience, and forgotten communities.

Why Landmark Status Matters

Landmark designation provides legal protection that ensures Hart Island cannot be destroyed, sold, or significantly altered without rigorous review and public input.

Without it, the island remains vulnerable to:

  • Development pressures and commercial interests
  • Grave disturbance or relocation
  • Loss of historical integrity
  • Reduced family access and transparency

Landmark status would secure permanent protections while honoring the cultural and historical significance of America's largest public cemetery.

Accountability

Oversight & Responsible Management

Current city plans lack clear protections and exclude families from decision-making. We're demanding accountable oversight that centers dignity and transparency.

The Problem Today

  • Families excluded from management decisions about their loved ones' resting place
  • Limited transparency in operational plans and budget allocation
  • Risk of grave recycling or marker displacement without family consent
  • Insufficient visitation opportunities and restrictive access policies
  • No independent oversight committee with family representation
  • Lack of public accountability for site conditions and maintenance

What We Demand

  • Family Representation: Oversight committee including relatives of those buried on Hart Island
  • Full Transparency: Public access to all management plans, budgets, and site decisions
  • No Grave Disturbance: Binding commitment to preservation over development or relocation
  • Expanded Access: Increased visitation hours and respectful memorial opportunities
  • Independent Oversight: Third-party monitoring of conditions and management practices
  • Community Input: Regular public forums for family voices and concerns
